The Battle for America: How the Fight for Fort Caroline Shaped the United States Online
Join Professor Wesley Moody for a discussion of how the 1561-1565 competition between the French and Spaniards for control of the American Southeast culminated in the battle of Fort Caroline and eventually ushered in English colonization of the United States.
The events described are the first military conflict between Europeans in continental North America. They were not raids or skirmishes. The French commander had more than a thousand fighting men, and his Spanish counterpart had over two thousand. Prof. Moody examines the events as military history and places them in the context of world events.
